Trident
Whitehead and Denham supported the government last night. They tried to take the position of sitting on the fence and not have to make a decision. The amendment which in Southampton they peddled as there idea and not Jon Trickett MP was not heard. Thus they fell in line with the government.
The motion to begin planning for a new generation of submarines to carry the weapons was passed by 409 votes to 161, a majority of 248 with 87 Labour MPs rebelling.

You can listen to the Trident debate on the Parliament website.

If you scroll forward to 6 hours and 45 minutes, you can listen to Alan Whitehead's speach.
As you say Alan Whitehead initially hinted that he would be rebelling on the vote, although ultimately he voted with the Government and the Conservatives.
His speach, in my view, is extremely poor. He talks for about 4 minutes. He stares at his notes the whole time, shifting constantly from foot to foot in an uncomfortable way. By the end he has completely lost the attention of the House.
For some good speaches listen to Tobias Elwood, Bournemouth MP and alsoas usual William Hague is awesome.

My mistake - according to his website Alan Whitehead abstained on the Trident vote.
